“You feel the heritage when you sing at the Bitter End. Each time I’m here, I’m aware that I’m standing where some of my singing/songwriting heroes have stood before me. Kind of makes me never want to leave.”
A Hong Kong native, Mara Measor is half-British and half-Chinese but you wouldn’t guess it when you hear her sing – that is, until she breaks out her Cantonese. After spending a year in Ethiopia developing her warm, provocative style, Mara now performs as an Indie Singer-Songwriter in New York City.
Mara began her melodic romance with the city with her performance at Joe’s Pub, and quickly became “one to watch” in the indie music scene, according to Audrey Magazine. Since then Mara has sang in cities across the US and China. Her bilingual song “I Want to Love You” was spotlighted by the Indie Music Reviewer and selected as a Best of the Year performance by the TV show “The Works” on RTHK (Hong Kong). Her music has been featured on Butterfly Radio, Earbits Radio and Hong Kong radio stations HKGFM, RTHK 3 and RTHK 4. She was a guest artist at Senator Martin Golden’s Asian Heritage Celebration in 2012, and was most recently the opening performer at the Awards Ceremony for the Asian American Journalist Association V3Con in Los Angeles. Most recently her new track “Ready” was licensed on the TV show One Life to Live. With an acting degree from NYU, Mara has also starred in numerous independent films and acted alongside Simon Russell Beale in the Atlantic Theater Company’s Off-Broadway production of Bluebird.
Her debut album was released September 2013.
